With the Harlequin designs I wanted to create a sense of playfulness and trickery, I based it around weird and wonderful characters like the Mad Hatter. Channeling the Harlequin’s eccentric chequered and diamond shapes, I made use of the sharp and harsh monochrome repetition with the subtle, soft colours seeping in. When researching vintage jokers and circus graphic designs I wanted to create designs that emulated their whimsical and playful nature, but with an element of cynicism and foreboding. I love tapping into things that used to scare me as a child and topics of jokers and Harlequins used to keep me up at night.
